AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...High pressure is forecast to remain over NW California
through the weekend resulting in dry weather and generally above
normal daytime temperatures. Overnight and morning temperatures
will remain chilly with night and morning fog in the river valleys.

.DISCUSSION...Northerly wind surge offshore has been keeping
stratus locked in over the Humboldt Bay region and Eel river
delta today. Stratus has been slowly eroding over the north bay
around Arcata and Mckinleyville. It should scour out later this
afternoon as northerlies increase ever so slighlty. Moist air
trapped against the coastal range and in the Eel delta may result
in more stratus and fog development this evening once solar
insolation ceases. Offshore flow has kept stratus away from the
shoreline north of Trinidad and along the Del Norte coast where
sunshine has been plentiful today. Models do indicate strengthening
offshore flow tonight and Thursday which should help to eradicate
the stratus around Humboldt Bay/Eel delta on Thursday. Along the
Mendocino coast and SW Humboldt coast small scale circulations
may develop and keep stratus or fog along the shoreline tonight
through Thursday.

Interior and coastal river valleys have been fogging up just about
every night and morning with temperatures dipping down to 32F or
less. Stations in northern Trinity, particularly in Weaverville
and Trinity Center, still have not reached 50F degrees as of 2 pm
today thanks to a strong inversion. Multiple "higher elevation"
stations in southern Trinity, southern Humboldt, Mendocino and
Lake Counties with southern sun exposure have been warming into
the lower to mid 70s this afternoon again. The strong inversion
and weak mixing will make it difficult for many of the narrower
valleys in Trinity and portions of northern Humboldt to warm even
into the lower 60s this week. With clear skies and exceptional
longwave cooling, it will continue to remain cold in the river
valleys each night and morning, especially in northern Humboldt,
Trinity and northern Mendo through the end of this week. Fog is
highly probably in the river valleys of Trinity, Humboldt and
northern Mendo each and every night. The ridge aloft is not
forecast to breakdown anytime soon and will continue to provide
dry and stable weather conditions for NW California through the
weekend.

Global ensembles and deterministic model guidance have been indicating
slight potential for some light drizzle around Wednesday next week,
generally not much more than a 10-20% chance in 12 hours for a few
hundredths. Longer range model predictions beyond Wednesday are
trending wetter, though exact details remain elusive. After another
prolonged stretch of dry weather, wet weather will likely return
for the latter part of January for NW CA.

.AVIATION...Coastal stratus may loom close to the coast and be
impactful through the afternoon, especially at ACV, but otherwise
VFR conditions are expected today. Stronger offshore flow tonight
is expected to diminish the impacts from coastal stratus, but some
brief LIFR impacts around Humboldt Bay are still possible. Interior
valleys could see stratus and fog again, but impacts at UKI are
unlikely. Del Norte County may see impacts from low level wind
shear overnight. JB

.MARINE...Northerly winds increase today bringing steep northerly
wind waves. The worst winds are constrained to the outer waters,
particularly north of Cape Mendocino, where gale force gusts are
possible. Nearshore winds are much lighter, but some propagation
of steep seas into the inner waters are possible. Along with steep
wind waves, there will be a long-period west swell filling in
today at around 7 ft at 16 seconds along with the existing
decaying west swells. Winds begin to ease and seas begin to
subside late Thursday and Friday. Light winds and subdued seas of
2-4 ft are likely Saturday and most of Sunday. JB

.BEACH HAZARDS...A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect until midnight
tonight. A long period westerly swell has brought a low to moderate
risk for sneaker waves to the coast. Sneaker waves are a unique
hazard, with up to 30 minutes between waves. Large, unexpected
waves can sweep across the beach without warning, sweeping people
into the sea from rocks, jetties, and beaches. These sneaker waves
can also move large objects such as logs, crushing anyone caught
underneath. Even ankle to knee deep water can knock you down and
drag you out when a sneaker wave hits. Pay attention and stay
above the high water line and any wet sand to stay safe. If the
ground is wet, waves have surged there recently. Stay safe and
